    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Anti-Vibration System
STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience.

    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.
  • Zoom
    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.
* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length based on which powerhead it is installed on.

MS 391 is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 298.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lube pump was pumping air on a brand new saw. Bought it brand new because I needed the 25 inch bar to cut down my brother in law's tree. Brand new, excited. Made sure it was filled with fuel and bar and chain lube. In short, it couldn't even cut down its first tree because the lube pump was pumping air!!! Long story: did the break in, things looked good. oil coming off the chain. Had to top some of the tree since it was overhanging the neighbors yard. Refueled and re-lubed the chainsaw. On the 8th~ cut with just finished re-fuel and lube... I chose to cut a wedge out of the tree that I was knocking down. This chainsaw is not capable of cutting upwards. I ran it about 2 minutes, trying to cut upwards and I saw smoke coming out of the chain area. Stopped cutting immediately. then checked for lube coming off the chain.... none... blipped the throttle gently to see if the lube pump had caught up.... nope. 5 minutes later. started to see chain oil coming off the chain... tried cutting again... about 1 minute in. same deal. lube pump pumping air. Stopped cutting. blipped the throttle to keep the chain slowly rolling, about 4 minutes into it... no oil still. Pulled the bar off... put on level ground and let it idle ... tons of bubbles coming out of the lube... pulled the lube cover off and it looked like tons of air had been entrained into the bar and chain oil. Lube was down from the cap about an inch. (The look of the oil reminded me of italian salad dressing) Stopped altogether and took it back. Mechanic has to look at it before they will do anything. Still waiting on their analysis. I'll let STIHL decide it they want to post this or not. I am just concerned that I already have a broken, heat damaged saw case, bar, and chain that may or may not be replaced. As a pro, at least the chain saw started... and ran when I needed it. The other saw, (non-Stihl) that we had to deal with kept shutting off right as I was about to use it. This non-Stihl saw ended up finishing the job that this MS 391 couldn't do... and it did it without the lube pump pumping air !

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Big chainsaw not enough power. Biggest farm and ranch edition and it’s not powerful as I hope it had. Struggled with 36” pine and felt like it was overheating and bogging out

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Purchased in 2013 long term review I purchased this saw sometime in 2013 to use for felling and bucking large logs. This saw is a bit on the heavy side but 5 years later I am still satisfied with it and have cut up a lot of wood with it. Using a sharp chain you can cut through oak and other hardwood with ease and it will keep going long after you are ready to call it quits. My only complaint is that you have to follow the starting procedure exactly or it will flood and you are going to spend some time getting it going. Otherwise it has been great

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw for the price! Upgraded from my ms170 because I needed to fall some big pines and bucking them up was taking way too long! This saw is quite light and cuts through 16” round softwood in about 2-3 seconds depending on chain sharpness. I had trouble starting it at first but took back to the dealership and had the carb adjusted. Starts with 5-6 pulls cold and I realized I was wide open choking it too much and flooding the engine. Access to filter is annoying but how often do you need to get in there? This is a great saw for the price, I would buy it again. Has enough power with a ripping chain to mill up 12-15” logs as well, although it’s a little slow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty of power, almost no vibration I've used a Sachs Dolmar saw for the last 25 years. When it died on me I bought the MS 391. I've only used two tanks of fuel through it but find it to be an excellent choice. Easy to start if you follow instructions, excellent cutting power. I just cut up a huge elm (28inches at the base) with my 20 inch bar. Fuel consumption is great and little to no vibration transferring back to my arms. Extremely happy with my purchase. In fact I just told the dealer that today.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Won't start and stay running Brand new chain saw and won't run.... used it 7-8 times now and takes at least 10 min to start... I took it in to dealer and they did nothing.. I grew up using a stihl saw and that's why I bought one... but I will never buy another pos...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Saw Have 4 others but needed to step up to a saw that will do everything that I want it to do, so far so good, may need a bigger one, you never know.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw for the price It a great saw for the price, I've only had the saw for two weeks and have ran a few tanks through it. Immediately noticed the small felling dogs weren't cutting it. Ordered larger dogs asap had them in a couple days. Also could use 1/4 turn clips for filter/carb access. Other then that like I said for the price and how well it runs I love the saw.
